This lecture accompanied an exhibit that originated from the National Library of Medicine on black healers who served during the American Civil War. This exhibit has a persistent web presence that includes teaching modules. Margaret Humphreys prepared the lesson plan and readings for the higher education module.

This material draws on her book Intensely Human: The Health of Black Soldiers in the American Civil War (2008), available from Johns Hopkins University Press.
